For years after I became Christian until very recently I always felt guilty doing art – like it was a frivolous passtime no use to anyone except to glorify the artist (me) – which I suppose it can be and often is. For instance it’s almost impossible to perform a rock song without a sense of rebelliousness regardless of the words – it’s the spirit behind the melodies / beat etc (I play music). So struggled with art and actually went out to do a ‘normal’ job rather than pursue art as a career as I felt this was more noble (don’t laugh) – until I heard a guy explain a year ago how humans are the ONLY creature capable of art and able to use this peculiar gift to glorify god (glaringly obvious but I just somehow missed the point of it as the world’s art is so good that it’s hard to see how some of it does not help us and is capable of drawing us away from God) and that art can be the greatest tribute to god if done with that spirit. I guess all the incredible artistry of the cathedrals might be an example. So my answer now is definitely yes – all art should be done to glorify God – in story, poetry, abstract or whatever form it takes. Art can bypass words reason and truth and go straight into the subconscious – so it would also make sense that Satan would use it as his most useful tool which i think we see.
